Farmers' demands for crop insurance premiums have been reduced by 60%. Insurance claims have been reduced as no major incidents such as crop damage have occurred. Under the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme, Rs 9,570 crore has been sanctioned in the financial year 2020-21. In 2019-20, the crop insurance claim of Rs 27.37 crore was significantly higher. In the 2016-17 financial year, the central government implemented the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme. With the revision of the 2018 Rabi season and the 2020 kharif season, the benefits of the scheme have reached more people.
In 2020-21, Prime Minister's Crop Insurance the scheme, 6.12 lakh farmers insured Rs 1.93 lakh crore on their 4.5 million hectares of farmland. Out of this, the farmers claimed only Rs 9,570 crore. During the kharif season, the insurance claims were settled at a cost of Rs 6,77 crore and the Rabi season at Rs 2,79 crore. The highest insurance claims came from Rajasthan. The state has received crop insurance of Rs 3,602 crore. This is followed by Maharashtra, where Rs 1,232 crore has been disbursed and Haryana has been given crop insurance of Rs 1,112.7 crore. In the 2019-20 fiscal, 613 lakh farmers across the country had insured Rs 2,19,226 crore of their 501 lakh hectares of farmland.
